The shortest way to float in Arctic water: you meet at Søndre Tollbodgate 19 by the Vervet waterfront in the city centre, get a safety briefing of about 15 minutes and then spend up to 1.5 hours in the harbour in an immersion rescue suit. There is no drive, and you do not need to be able to swim.
Authentic North runs the harbour float all year, under the polar night in winter and the midnight sun in summer. If you want to, you can jump in from the docks, a drop of 2 to 3 metres depending on the tide. A drink afterwards and an Arctic Ocean Floaters Club certificate are included. On very cold days the operator hands out insulating overalls for under the suit. Children under 8, anyone shorter than 130 cm and anyone over 150 kg cannot join.

From the GetYourGuide product pages, checked in October 2026. Ramfjordbotn lists 100 minutes for the guided tour and floating together, so the time in the water is shorter. The harbour float lists up to 1.5 hours in the water.
The same operator runs a camp in Ramfjordbotn, 25 minutes out of town, with pickup and a campfire.
Pickup in the centre, floating camp with a cabin by the sea, campfire with pastries. Day or night visits.
Authentic North picks you up in the centre of Tromsø or at Tromsø Lodge & Camping and drives you about 25 minutes to its floating camp in Ramfjordbotn, a cabin by the sea. There you climb into a rescue suit over your own warm clothes and float in the fjord with a guide. The programme gives 100 minutes for the guided part in the water.
Afterwards there is a campfire with coffee, tea and snacks, including pastries baked over the fire, and a certificate from the Arctic Ocean Floaters Club. You can choose a day visit or a night visit with a chance of northern lights. The operator writes that the fjord freezes over from January to March. Children under 8, anyone shorter than 130 cm and anyone over 150 kg cannot join.
Pickup in the city centre (Søndre Tollbodgate 11) or at Tromsø Lodge & Camping, then about 25 minutes by car to Ramfjordbotn.

After the briefing you get into the water at the quayside and lie back in the suit. The operator lists up to 1.5 hours in the water; one guest in April writes that her group floated for about an hour and stayed dry, a guest in February counted around 40 minutes. You do not need to be able to swim. If you want to, you can jump in from the docks, a drop of 2 to 3 metres depending on the tide. A hot or cold drink and an Arctic Ocean Floaters Club certificate follow. Guests often mention the guides by name and the photos they take.
You float in the middle of town, so expect boats, quays and people. One critical guest had expected to go out to sea and instead walked into the water at the city port, with onlookers taking photos from the shore. Another found the location unremarkable. If mountains and quiet matter more to you than time and convenience, the fjord tours are the better match: the camp in Ramfjordbotn or Kaldfjord.
Authentic North runs the harbour float all year. In winter you float under the polar night, which in Tromsø lasts from roughly late November to mid-January, and around midday there is only twilight. In summer the sun does not set from roughly 19 May to 27 July. For the winter the operator recommends several layers under the suit, wool if possible, and on very cold days it hands out insulating overalls.
One guest got a sore neck from the position you hold while floating, and was cold because water came into the suit; another got cold towards the end. Warm wool layers under the suit and dry clothes for afterwards help. Ask the guide how to rest your head if you feel strain.
Children from 8 years, from 130 cm tall and up to 150 kg. The product page lists the activity as wheelchair accessible; ask the operator how getting into and out of the water works. Drones and diving are not allowed.
The low ratings come from guests who expected open sea or scenery and got a city quay with onlookers, plus one sore neck and one cold float with water in the suit. The others describe a relaxed hour in the water and attentive guides.
“Very fun and super relaxing just floating! I was the only one who signed up for my time block but had a great host Mathieu and he kept me company and safe throughout the whole thing. The suits can be silly looking but it’s such a fun and unique experience. Would definitely do again!”
“The guide was very attentive and handsome. He explained the details of the movements very clearly and took a lot of photos. We floated for about an hour in total, and no water got into our clothes. At the end, I jumped in and got a little wet. It was a great experience!”
“This was a special adventure, and I can only recommend it. A great experience to float in the water and just let yourself drift. The guide, Mathieu, was friendly, highly motivated and very experienced. Thank you!”
“Uma is an excellent guide: she explains calmly and provides adequate support at every stage. She took numerous photos both before and during the experience. […] It is definitely something different, not the usual tour of the fjord, but a "refreshing" swim, an immersive and natural experience.”
“I have pain in mu neck muscles because of the way you have to swim and lay. Was cold the whole time because water came inside of the suit. You get to be around 40 minutes inside the water.”
“I thought I could go out to sea to float, but it turned out I just got into the water at the city port and walked into the sea to float. During the process, I received stares and photos from everyone on the shore. Towards the end, it got very cold […]”
